چکیده

The rounding of orders to achieve a batch size is recognised as a source of the bullwhip problem within supply chains. While it is often advocated that batch sizes should be reduced as much as possible, there has been limited investigation into the impact of batching on bullwhip. Here we consider scenarios where orders are placed only in multiples of a fixed batch size, for both deterministic and stochastic demand rates. By manipulating mathematical equations, we derive a closed form expression for bullwhip when demand is deterministic. This is validated through a simple model of a production control system. An expression for bullwhip in a pass on orders scenario with stochastic demand is also derived and validated. Using simulation, we show the impact of changing batch size on bullwhip in a production control system. Our results show that a manager may achieve economies through batching while minimising the impact on bullwhip through the careful selection of the batch size.

Modeling and analysis of the causes of bullwhip effect in centralized and decentralized supply chain using response surface method

The ‘‘bullwhip’’ effect is a major cause of supply chain deficiencies. This phenomenon refers to grow the amplification of demand or inventory variability as it moves up the supply chain. Supply chain managers experience this variance amplification in both inventory levels and orders. Other side, dampening variance in orders may have a negative impact on customer service due to the increase in ...

Vendor Managed Inventory and bullwhip reduction in a two level supply chain

This paper compares the bullwhip properties of a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) supply chain with those of a traditional “serially-linked” supply chain. The emphasis of this investigation is the comparative impact the two structures have on the “Bullwhip Effect” generated. Particular attention is paid to the manufacturer’s production ordering activities as demonstrated using a simulation model ...

Characterizing order processes of ( s , S ) and ( r , nQ ) policies

In this paper we provide a novel approach to characterize the order process of an (s, S) and an (r, nQ) inventory policy. These inventory policies are commonly used when a fixed order cost is present. We provide two distinct perspectives. First, we analyze the time between subsequent replenishments, as well as the size of the replenishment orders, and characterize the distribution of both. Seco...

Behavioral Causes of the Bullwhip Effect and the Observed Value of Inventory Information

T tendency of orders to increase in variability as one moves up a supply chain is commonly known as the bullwhip effect. We study this phenomenon from a behavioral perspective in the context of a simple, serial, supply chain subject to information lags and stochastic demand. We conduct two experiments on two different sets of participants. In the first, we find the bullwhip effect still exists ...

Quantifying the Bullwhip Effect in the Supply Chain of Small-Sized Companies

This research addressed the Bullwhip Effect (BWE) in the supply chain of small companies and quantified the impact of the interaction between demand management strategies and forecasting methods on BWE. Experiments were performed with four management strategies and three forecasting techniques for different levels of seasonality, lead times, and order batching. Results indicate that no demand m...
